The Final Fantasy Remake trilogy is concluding in 2027 with the release of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, but that doesn’t have to be the end.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is set to have a definitive ending with any possible DLCs focusing on “untold stories” instead of continuing the main cast’s adventures together. For fans of the series, the ending is the ending they’re expecting, but more content is already announced for after launch.
Following an Epic Games Store DLC leak that revealed a total of nine DLCs could come to the game eventually, Square Enix revealed two DLC story expansions for the game. These two expansions will revolve around Vincent and Sephiroth, and we’re fully expecting more DLCs to come. But what about after the DLCs?
In an interview with GamerBraves, producer Yoshinori Kitase and director Naoki Hamaguchi teased that Square Enix could create more spin-off games under the Final Fantasy 7 umbrella. This wouldn’t be too surprising, the original FF7 already resulted in a number of spin-offs, but these would also be new stories not seen in prior games or films.
In the interview, Hamaguchi explained that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation isn’t planning to close the book on these characters with a “true ending”. As fans know, the original game has a definitive end, but it also led into stories like Advent Children, and the team doesn’t want to introduce a new ending that cuts these characters off.
Additionally, the team is still deciding on future DLCs that will follow Vincent and Sephiroth’s new stories. Hamaguchi explained that the team is “seriously considering” new stories that focus on other characters, following the trend the team started with the first remake’s Yuffie DLC.
As for the continuation of these character after Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, Kitase explained that the characters’ decades-long popularity is the reason why FF7 has continued for so long. Kitase, who worked on the original FF7, explained the team thought they were done after completing the original entry, but fans just wanted more.
“The characters were so popular and so lasting, it really… The fan reaction to these characters really is what brought on the spinoff games as well like Advent Children and Crisis Core,” Kitase said.
With that in mind, Kitase believes the same can be true again, arguing that new spin-off games could release if fan demand is there. Just like Crisis Core, if there is a fervour for more content in the Final Fantasy 7 universe with FF7 characters, then they’ll probably make it.
“While we’re putting our all into Revelation and making sure it’s the best quality and we can confidently say it’s the end of the series, who knows what’s going to happen with fan reaction and how people come to enjoy this series and this finale,” the producer said.
Considering the success of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake project, it does seem likely that these characters will pop up again in the future. For many, these characters are some of the most nostalgic video game characters around, and nostalgia is addicting. (There’s only one FF7 spin-off game we really need: a Dave the Diver-style Seventh Heaven bar management game.)
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation launches next year on PC, PS5, Xbox Series, and Nintendo Switch 2. The game’s physical editions will not include the whole game on the disc with every copy requiring some form of download to play.
