A video game spin-off of Cyberpunk 2077 anime spin-off Cyberpunk Edgerunners was in development at Shantae developer WayForward.
While fans are still waiting for any crumb of information for Cyberpunk 2, which will seemingly remain a first-person affair, it appears that a spin-off game was in development at some point. Described as a “smaller side game”, a 2.5D brawler based on the Cyberpunk Edgerunners anime was in the works.
Reported by MP1ST, the possible-scrapped game was discovered on the portfolio of a former employee. The unannounced video game adaptation of the anime is said to have been in “very early” development, and it’s not known if it is still in some form of development at the time of publication.
The video game would have seen a “rollback-driven 2.5 brawler” which would allow the game to be played in online multiplayer co-op. According to the report, it was in the works sometime between 2025 and 2026, but has been seemingly halted at the studio due to a lack of funding. However, the project could be resumed at some point.
The game’s working title was conceptualised as Project Gemini and would’ve adadpted the show’s “high-energy anime aesthetic” into video game form. Additionally, as an adaptation of Edgerunners’ first season, it would’ve seen players take on the role of familiar characters such as David, Lucy, Rebecca, and more.
Cyberpunk Edgerunners has technically made its video game debut in two other properties. Recently, the character of Lucy was added to the gacha game Wuthering Waves with a Night City map and unique questline. Lucy also appeared as a guest character in Guilty Gear. Furthermore, the anime series served as the basis for a recent update of EA’s popular Apex Legends event which saw outfits and locales from the anime in the game.
Edgerunners’ popularity has been immense and helped serve as a catalyst for the renewed popularity of Cyberpunk 2077 following its rough launch. Today, a second season of the anime is just around the corner with brand-new characters and a new story coming later this year.
Unfortunately, it seems that WayForward’s Edgerunners game isn’t to be, although it could still pop up at some point in the future. The game would have been similar to the studio’s other 2.5D brawlers, such as River City Girls, which are simply albeit fun experiences that are designed to be replayed over and over again.
Due to the popularity of Edgerunners’ characters, it’s unlikely that they won’t appear again in some form. While WayForward’s game might be scrapped, we’d expect to see Lucy, David, and Rebecca again at some point in the future, despite their anime fates.
