Dark Souls creator pushes against investor calls for quicker, safer sequels as FromSoftware works “harder than ever to create truly valuable game”

Elden Ring, Dark Souls, and BloodBorne lead Hidetaka Miyazaki has rejected investor calls for quicker, safer sequels.

Currently working on Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition and The Duskbloods, which are both set to release this year, FromSoftware has a number of unannounced titles in the works. With the two aforementioned soulslikes set to release this year, investors at KADOKAWA have called for safer content and quick sequels to increase company value.

Since the acquisition of FromSoftware in 2014, releases of FromSoftware games have been the biggest earners for KADOKAWA. Outside of more niche releases like Armored Core, new games from the developer have been major financial successes for the parent company.

Speaking to investors, Elden Ring lead and FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki rejected the notion of safer releases as it would be harder to “create truly valuable games”. Via Japanese outlet Den Faminico Gamer, the Dark Souls creator explained that output at the studio is already good enough.

“I am generally satisfied with the development environment that FromSoftware currently has,” Miyazaki told investors. “I wouldn’t say there aren’t any areas for improvement, but we are able to create the games we want to make without excessive interference. And I believe that maintaining such an environment in the future, allowing us to concentrate solely on game development as much as possible, is of utmost importance to both myself and us at FromSoftware.”

Miyazaki also left in a message directly for fans. “If out users happen to read this message, we want to assure you that we will continue to work harder than ever to create truly valuable games. We hope you will look forward to our upcoming titles, both those already announced and those yet to be announced.”

FromSoftware, since Dark Souls’ release, have seen more hits than not. Elden Ring, for example, has been a major success for the studio and its parent company with sales of the game’s new Tarnished Edition and the upcoming Switch 2 exclusive The Duskbloods primed to be the biggest hits for KADOKAWA.

Both Tarnished Edition and The Duskbloods are planned to release this year, although the Dark Souls studio is also working on new unannounced games. While the soulslike genre is bigger than ever, there’s also more demand than ever for the genuine article, and only FromSoftware can deliver that.
